Course Curriculum

This 6 week course is comprised of 6 learning modules...

Each module addresses one of the key pillars of strong communication skills. When added together, these modules will help you help your child develop well-rounded communication skills. Each module contains 5-7 lessons; the lessons are comprised of an instructional video that includes multiple demonstrations as well as a home practice sheet so you can immediately apply what you've learned!

  1. Prepare (pre-language skills): What skills does my child need to learn BEFORE they start talking?
  2. Engage (interaction and play skills): How can I interact and play with my child to maximize their language development?
  3. Stimulate (receptive language): How can I help my child understand everything and consistently follow the directions I give? 
  4. Elicit (expressive language): How can I help my child maximize their vocabulary and use words easily to convey their wants, needs and ideas?
  5. Facilitate (speech sound development): How can I help my child develop their speech sounds so that they are easily understood when they talk?
  6. Connect (social communication): How can I help my child communicate for any reason, with anyone- to ask/answer questions, make friends, tell stories, negotiate, etc.

FAQ

  • My child is only 12 months old. Will this be helpful for me?

    Yes. This course is designed to teach caregivers about the building blocks of communication skills and will be applicable to your child now and as they grow.

  • My child is 4 years old. Are they too old for me to be taking this course?

    This course is designed for children at a certain level of communication rather than a particular age. If your child does not have 50 words and is not reliably combining two words together, it will be beneficial for you!

  • How do I know if my child is behind?

    We recommended that you speak to your doctor and or pursue a speech-language pathology assessment. This course is not designed to assess and identify the presence of a delay or disorder. Rather, the goal is to teach you the skills you need to teach your child.

  • My child is already working with a Speech Therapist. Is it still ok to take this course?

    Absolutely! As speech therapists ourselves, we sometimes find it difficulty to cover ALL the content we want to, in terms of caregiver training, when the child is also present. This course provides an excellent foundation to the parents and can complement speech therapy- either before, during or after.

  • My child has Autism Spectrum Disorder. Will this course help me?

    You bet. Many of the children we work with have an ASD diagnosis. As such, the course content includes a lot of information that is helpful to these families.

  • It says the course is 6 weeks. Can I take it at my own pace?

    Absolutely. We say our course is 6 weeks long because there are 6 modules and people tend to complete it within that timeframe. That said, you can absolutely go through the course at your own pace.

  • What if not all of the modules or lessons are relevant to my child? Is it a 'waste' of money to pay for the whole course?

    We encourage you to watch the intro lessons in each module. After completing the check-in, if you are confident that your child has mastered the skills outlined, then you can skip ahead, if you so choose. We recognize that you are busy and want to focus on your main areas of concern. That said, all of our students so far have reported loving learning about their children's strengths and using information about these skills to help them build up skills that are more challenging. Stephanie Zawalicz

Speech-Language Pathologist, MHSc.., CCC-SLP Reg. CASLPO

Stephanie obtained an Honours Bachelor of Science degree in Psychology at McMaster University before completing her Master of Health Science degree in Speech-Language Pathology at the University of Toronto.  After graduating from U of T, Stephanie provided cognitive-communication intervention in the community to clients with acquired brain injuries before working in a private pediatric practice and proving early intervention with the local Preschool Speech and Language Program. After working in Ontario for several years, Stephanie moved to the US, first to San Francisco, California and then Austin, Texas, where she continued to develop her clinical skills in several pediatric speech-language clinics. Stephanie moved back to Toronto to be closer to her family and to partner with Jill, as a co-owner of a busy speech-therapy clinic north of Toronto.  Stephanie is passionate about continuing education; her additional training includes: Introduction to PROMPT, PROMPT Bridging, Hanen’s More Than Words, Talkability, Introduction to PECS, Lidcombe Program for Early Intervention of Stuttering, Kaufman Speech to Language Protocol, Language Acquisition through Motor Planning (LAMP), The Orofacial Rest Posture Program (ORPP) Screening and Preliminary Intervention for Pediatric SLPs, and Cognitive-Communication Disorders: Level 1 and 2. She is registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO) and is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA) and Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (OSLA).

Jill McDermid

Jill obtained a Bachelor of Health Science degree (double major: Health Science and Linguistics) at the University of Western Ontario before completing the Communicative Disorders Assistant (CDA) program at Georgian College.  After working as a CDA for several years, Jill moved to Chicago to obtain her Master of Science degree in Speech Language and Learning (concentration: Speech-Language Pathology) from Northwestern University.  While in Chicago, Jill developed clinical skills providing SLP services to infants and preschool-aged children at Lurie Children’s Hospital of Chicago, school-aged children within the Evanston, Illinois school district, and adults at Northwestern Memorial Hospital. Jill has experience evaluating and facilitating the development of a wide range of speech and language skills including speech sounds, receptive and expressive language, literacy, social communication, voice, fluency, cognitive communication, feeding/swallowing, and accent modification. She has additional training in PROMPT (Introduction to PROMPT: Technique) and is certified in Hanen's More Than Words, It Takes Two to Talk, Target Word, and Talkability. Jill is the co-owner of a private speech therapy clinic outside of Toronto, Ontario and she also provides communication and swallowing assessment and treatment at two local hospitals.  Jill is a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), the Ontario Association of Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists (OSLA) and is registered with the College of Audiologists and Speech-Language Pathologists of Ontario (CASLPO).
